Headaches and migraines
can cause symptoms such as light and sound sensitivity, nausea and
vomiting, and severe head pain. For some, too much screen time can
trigger these kinds of headaches.
If you spend a lot of time behind a screen, we’ve put together a few tips on how to minimize technology-related headaches and how to find relief from your symptoms.
How Technology Can Be a Trigger for Migraines
There
are many reasons why technology, such as your phone or laptop screen,
can trigger headaches and migraines. Three of the most common reasons
are:
- Bright lights: If
you work in a space with a lot of natural sunlight or harsh indoor
lighting and you are also using a screen with bright lights, this
over-illumination can trigger a headache.
- Eyestrain: If
you don’t keep enough distance between your eyes and the screen, your
eye muscles will have a hard time adjusting. This constant eyestrain can
lead to a headache or migraine.
- Poor posture: Another common headache or migraine trigger is maintaining poor posture when using technology. If you are hunched in front of your monitor, for example, you are putting a lot of strain on your cervical neck and body.
Tips to Reduce Technology Headaches
Here are a few tips to try out to reduce your chances of suffering from a technology headache:
- Reduce screen brightness and glare: Try adjusting both
the brightness and contrast settings on your screen. You can also try
using a glare filter or blue light filtering glasses for additional
protection.
- Follow the “20-20-20” rule: For every 20 minutes that you spend staring at a screen, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.
- Maintain good posture: Make
sure your workstation is set up in a way that promotes good posture.
For example, you want your screen to be about 20-25 inches away from
your eyes and you want to sit up straight while keeping your feet flat
on the floor.
- Take breaks: Every so often, stand up and
step away from your screen for a quick break. You can stretch, walk
around or practice some posture exercises before heading back to work.
